Doing Good Business in the Year of the Rooster

Chinese new year greeting card

January 2017 brings in the Year of the Fire Rooster. For many local enterprises, 2016 was a difficult year to weather: unemployment rose to its highest level in more than two years, and several industries – such as the manufacturing and financial services sectors – experienced slow growth. With the new lunar calendar year, business owners are hopeful that the year of the fiery animal will bring much-needed relief, recovery and prosperity.

As the arrival of spring compels us to reflect and move forward with renewed optimism and resolve, it’s worth considering how the Year of the Rooster can affect our business health. Here are some tips to keep in mind.

  1. Work hard and be practical

The rooster is connected to autumn, the season of the harvest. However, the rooster is naturally a vain and overconfident animal. Success will only be possible this year through diligence, conscientiousness and disciplined work. Do not fall prey to get-rich-quick schemes, but rely instead on practical and well-proven endeavors, as well as a strong work ethic. In doing so, you will be able to reap the rewards of your labor.

  1. Focus on strategic planning

A new year brings new opportunities. Don’t allow pessimism from 2016 to carry over and overwhelm or scare you from making strategic investment decisions, which could pay off later in the year.

  1. Expand your network

Roosters are communal birds. Therefore, the year ahead promises to be a fruitful one for making new connections and embarking on joint ventures. Invest time and effort into meeting new people and reconnecting with former acquaintances – a profitable partnership could blossom in the unlikeliest of places.

  1. Direct good feng shui into your office and overall business

Feng shui masters Edgar Lok and Jodi Brunner both note that the north will be critical for career success this year, as it houses star 6. In feng shui terms, the four main compass points are found on a floor plan of the building before an annual flying star chart is applied to it. Each star is then located in a different part of the building.

In an interview with The Japan Times, Brunner said: “Star 6 is excellent for career success but you have to be prepared to work harder. Hang some certificates and qualifications in the north this year.”

The Year of the Fire Rooster will prove to be profitable as long as you pay your dues and focus on practicality and strategic planning. By following these tips, you can direct your business affairs with more confidence and assurance. Huat ah!
